Important Events— 15 September


1953— S. Vijayalakshmi Pandit was elected as the first lady President of the eighth session of the United Nations Organisation's (UNO) General Assembly. 
1965— President Ayub Khan appeals to the US to use its influence to end Indian-Pakistani hostilities. 
1967— Ramkrishnarao Burgula, Chief Minister of Hyderabad, died. 
1981 – Vanuatu becomes a member of the United Nations.
1982— The first edition of the USA Today newspaper was published. 
1983 – Israeli premier Menachem Begin resigns.
1987 – United States Secretary of State George Shultz and Soviet Foreign Minister Eduard Shevardnadze sign a treaty to establish centers to reduce the risk of nuclear war.
1993— Election Commission announces polls in the former BJP-ruled states of UP, MP, HP, Rajasthan and in Delhi and Mizoram.
2000— The Summer Olympics opened in Sydney, Australia. 
2001— President George W. Bush identified Osama bin Laden as the prime suspect in the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, and told Americans to prepare for a long, difficult war against terrorism.
2008 – Lehman Brothers files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, the largest bankruptcy filing in U.S. history.
