1846 – William T. G. Morton first demonstrated ether anesthesia at the Massachusetts General Hospital in the Ether Dome.
1905 – The Partition of Bengal in India takes place.
1923 – The Walt Disney Company is founded by Walt Disney and his brother, Roy Disney.
1940 – Holocaust: The Warsaw Ghetto is established.
1945 – The Food and Agriculture Organization is founded in Quebec City, Canada.
1946 – Nuremberg Trials: Execution of the convicted Nazi leaders of the Main Trial.
1951 – The first Prime Minister of Pakistan, Liaquat Ali Khan, is assassinated in Rawalpindi.
1964 – China detonates its first nuclear weapon.
1973 – Henry Kissinger and Le Duc Tho are awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. 
1983 – Harish Chandra, great Indian scientist, died. His work in a narrow branch of modern mathematics led to its development to such an extent that it drew the attention of mathematicians all over the world.
1992 – Capt. P. K. Sahgal of Azad Hind Fauz died.
1995 – The Million Man March occurs in Washington, D.C. 
1999 – Congress (I)-NationalistCongress Party (NCP) combine is invited to form the Government in Maharashtra. Vilasrao Deshmukh to be sworn in as Chief Minister. 
1999 – Dr. Najma Heptulla, Deputy Chairperson of the Rajya Sabha, is elected president of the 138-nation Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU).
