It was an awards function to celebrate the best translated works from across the country but speakers at the event organised in Chennai by Sahitya Akademi also focussed on the lack of patronage for regional literature and its translations.
Tamil writer Ashokamitran, while appreciating the efforts of the 24 recipients of the Sahitya Akademi’s ‘Translation Prizes 2012’ and appreciating the Akademi’s efforts for conducting the event outside of New Delhi for the first time, also pointed out that the patronage for translated books had been coming down in recent decades.
Mr.Asokamitran pointed out that he had himself seen the royalties from translated works dwindle in recent years.
On the sidelines of the event, Sahitya Akademi president Vishwanath Prasad Tiwari agreed with Tamil writer Mr.Asokamitran but said the same could probably be extended to all books. The winners of the Sahitya Akademi translation prizes 2012 are: Pankaj Thakur (Assamese); Oinam Nilkantha Singha (Bengali), Swarna Prabha Chainary (Bodo), Sashi Pathania (Dogri); M.L.Thangappa (English); Shalini Chandrakant Topiwala (Gujarati); Ramji Tiwari (Hindi); K.K.Nair and Ashok Kumar (Kannada); Abdul Ahad Hajini (Kashmiri); Gurunath Shivaji Kelekar (Konkani); Mahendra Narayan Ram (Maithili), Anand (P.Sachidanandan) (Malayalam); Elangbam Sonamani Singh (Manipuri); Satish Kumar Verma (Punjabi); Poorn Sharma ‘Pooran’ (Rajasthani), Bhagirathi Nanda (Sanskrit); Rabindra Nath Murmu (Santali); Hiro Thakur (Sindhi), G.Nanjundan (Tamil), R.Venkateswara Rao (Telugu) and Ather Farouqui (Urdu).
