1821 – Mexico gains its independence from Spain.
1822 – Jean-François Champollion announces that he has deciphered the Rosetta stone.
1825 – The first locomotive to haul a passenger train was operated by George Stephenson in England.
1833– Raja Rammohan Roy, great social reformer, lawyer and politician passed away at Stapleton Grove in England.
1908 – The first production of the Ford Model T automobile was built at the Piquette Plant in Detroit, Michigan.
1928– The United States recognized the Nationalist Chinese government.

1972– Shri Shiyali Ramamrita Ranganathan, prolific author and first librarian of the University of Madras, passed away at the age of 80 at Bangalore.
