A sum of
Rs. 26.65 crore has been disbursed as educational aid through the Department of
Adi Dravidar Welfare to 40,391 students belonging to Adi Dravidars, Scheduled
Tribes and Adi Dravidars having converted from Christianity. According to an
official release, another sum of Rs. 70.68 lakh was disbursed to 11,533 girl
students under a scheme to promote girls education.
Further,
Rs. 16.83 lakh was given to 910 students of workers having a hazardous working
environment.
Separately,
Rs. 1.56 lakh was disbursed to meet the higher education expense of seven
students who had excelled in class X public examination.
They have
been admitted to reputed private schools in the city. Further, Rs. 1.62 crore
was spent towards purchasing bicycles for students going to Class XII.
Collector
M. Karunagaran also warned self financing colleges in the city to implement a
Government Order that provided fee exemption to students belonging to Adi
Dravidars, Scheduled Tribes and Adi Dravidars having converted from
Christianity.
The schools
and colleges must also submit the scholarship applications to the Department of
Adi Dravidar Welfare within a month of the classes commencing.
